phpBB is a popular BB, but not good.
I've used vBB, and after that I've tried MyBB. So on I saw my friend phpBB forum, it's so ugly.
Other side, phpBB too hard to get mod.
If vBB is 10 points - So MyBB get 9.5
I love MyBB

I installed the last version and tried to use it for the first time - I am a newbie. I heard good things about it and I am very disappointed. Installation is very heavy, guidelines are hard to follow, up too many features and permissions are impossible. After struggling with support on and off I decided to find another application. This one is too complicated for my needs.

Great and best free forum. Good support, features...best choice. Phpbb3 with MODs can do anything as other forums.

Looks nice to the user but it a total pain to manage - also you have so many spambots hit your site

I´ve used phpbb2 for many years too. When phpbb3 came up, I decided to convert to another forum software.
The main reason was a lack of simplicity for many forum admins, used to work with phpbb2. As stated before, installing and mantaining mods is a nightmare. Besides, permissions system is too complicated for some people.

I also worked hard to fix some of old phpbb2 styles for the new version. And now, none of them will work on v 3.0.6.

I don´t agree with those who say they have a great support either. After posting several questions without an efficient reply, I had to ask my friend Google to solve my problems.

Too many difficulties here. It´s time to move to a script with an easier way to customize mods and styles, and a better support.

Hello,
phpbb3 .. well I dont like it. Dont curse me. I know what i am saying. I used phpbb2 for 5 long years .. then they released phpbb3. Its was completely different, code was different, templating system was changed. phpbb2 templates couldnt be used on phpbb3. The upgrade was crude, then never helped or did support over the migration from phpbb2 to phpbb3. Maybe they were to happy to recreate phpbb3 that they complete forgot phpbb2.

I was one of those who would kill someone for saying a word against phpbb2 or its team. One of the active member with 5000+ post in the Phpbb forums.

But every good thing has to end or change. So did the phpbb2.

I shifted to Vb. I used to hate Vb.

Good Luck to everyone. Take care buddies.. Still cant forget phpbb Team. Thanks for being there friends.. Forum scripts are nothing if PHPBB was not there.

Great script and very configurable. However lacks certain email on event settings and adding mods is a nightmare.

Try SMF before you settle for you board script...

vBuletin and Invision are superior to phpBB: in appearance, usability, and ability to modify. Yes, they have fees associated with them, but the old axiom regarding receiving what one pays for holds true here.

I dislike phpBB 3. I found that it was far to complicated to use when you just pick it up. Far more complicated when you come from phpBB 2. It's far to complicated to install mods. If you are a beginner, I do not recommend it. I recommend MyBB over phpbb 3. Only thing phpBB 3 has going for it, in my opinion, is a large mod database and community.

Was weighing up differences between phpBB3 and SMF. Decided on phpBB3 because it looked nicer. Install seemed slick.

I was about to declare victory when I ran into the 1-year old "re-authenticate forever" bug which phpBB seem to think doesn't exist, despite Google being swamped with evidence. Took me a few minutes to confirm that being a proxy server is the problem (particularly ones that fan out requests across IP addresses).

So, if you don't mind shutting out most corporate users and many people behind ISP proxies, then this is for you. But if you don't want to piss anyone off, then avoid at all costs.

My main concern about PHPBB, is the fact it send back
password and id at the registration time. This can
drive to trouble water for users who don't take care of their password and sometime use the same password on all their Internet business. After discussion on PHPBB board, the only solution to this issue was to have each Forum owner to alter the registration templates.

Not even better than SMF/MYBB. Time consuming to install mods, and a spambot target if you don't update it. However it has a great support from the community, they are nice and helpful.
