MODx Description
MODx is an open source CMS that helps you take control of your website. It makes updates easy, empowering end-users with as much control as you desire over website content and update frequency.

Techies call MODx a Content Management System (CMS for short). It's also a pretty schwanky Application Framework. A robust and flexible API and an event override system makes building engaging web projects and changing core functionality without hacking its code! a breeze.

Not only does MODx help you build sites fast, but it also hides its tremendous power unless it's needed. As far as end users know, MODx is just an easy-to-use CMS with tons of freely available resources and one heck of an end user community.

An elegant, fast and incredibly flexible CMS.
Everything a developer can dream of is there.

With ModX you have a new generation of CMS that makes website development a breeze.

Once you tried it you will never go back to another CMS. So take care!

With ModX you can run high traffic site, you join performance to utmost flexibility, and you have the designer paradise at your fingertip.

One weak point though, even if there are already many add-ons (modules) there still could be some more.
But the core is so rich that you don't really need so many new modules.

ModX is definitively one of the best CMS. Drupal, Joomla - just to name the most famous ones - can not compare with it.

ModX is 100% freedom, 100% flexibility, 100% performance.

ModX is born SEO, you have caching on all pages if needed, flexibility and extendability.

OK, ModX has a learning curve. For newbies it is a good thing to first follow a tutorial (there are many on the internet).
But the result, the pleasure to work with is worth the pain.

The Revolution Starts Now!

Modx Revolution has been released as stable. And I'm very excited. I've been actively working with ModX Evolution (1.x series) for about two years now and it's been the best experience of the all cm systems I've used. And these include Joomla, Mambo, Drupal and few commercial proprietary systems. All feel restrictive compared to ModX. And Revolution seems an upgrade.

I worked with Drupal, Joomla, and tested many other CMS.
No one was able to match ModX. This CMS is simply a new technology. A new generation of CMS id born.

I test ModX Revolution RC3 and wait impatiently for the stable version.

At least we know that we ModX a stable realese is... stable.
Not like other CMS (Drupal) that have to release a new update because of bug and security fixes. On top of having a lack of security, it is a real pain when you have to update all your customers sites.

It's nice to see all these great comments on ModX Evolution from professional developers.

Just wait until ModX Revolution comes out in a stable version.

ModX hopes to finish it on time so they can enter the next OS CMS Awards.

I bet they have a good change that ModX Revolution will blow every other CMS out of the water and set a new standard for open source CMS.

Best CMS ever! If you know something of programming you will be in love with this CMS/Framework it's really handy.

It makes you website development process be faster and larger.

Code less, gain more.

Manage multi-page menus using PHP include() just a couple of times and you'll want a CMS. Study what's out there in CMS land, how they're supported, how they're developing or stagnating, what they cost for both acquisition and support, how easily they can be extended and/or fused with other resources "out there" on the Web and the kind of work people are able to do with them. Unless your focus is large-scale-corporate subject to the Microsoft mandate, you'll prefer MODx.

Having said that, I have found bugs in the current release, but nothing that I couldn't work around. Documentation is thin, sometimes ambiguous and somewhat outdated, since MODx development continues apace. Indeed, MODx will shortly leave behind the Evolution code base in favor of the entirely new Revolution. Presently, the tough decision for a prospective MODx user is whether to go with Evo 1.0.3 and its known foibles now, then upgrade to Revo later, or to jump right into Revo and thus skip inevitable Evo -> Revo reworking of legacy sites. Actually, this is the sort of problem one likes to have!

Go ahead and jump. You know you want to.

Modx is well worth trying especially if you are not a programmer.
The flexibility and relative ease to which you can take your own bespoke design and hook it up with Modx is very refreshing.
There is a learning curve but I think I got to grips with the basics by sitting down and working with Modx in a couple of days...it's worth persevering with.
I can now hook up my designs with Modx easily within a couple of hours.
There's a great community too on the forums.

I've tried Joomla and think the back end is too bloated and it's not that easy to port your own designs.

For those having difficulties with blog integration...Modx is more a general CMS and is not really built to be a blog, however i have successfully set up a blog with ModX and although it's not Wordpress it's pretty damn good.

ModX is an excellent CMS / CMF.
During years I worked with Drupal, but I just birried it when I met ModX.

OK, ModX has a learning curve. I would say it is not difficult as such, but one must understand the core concept that is totally different when compared to Drupal, Joomla or Wordpress
For beginners there is an excellent tutorial at http://codingpad.maryspad.com/beginner-tutorials/

What ModX brings to compared to traditional CMS is performance and full freedom in design.

Performance hit a top as one can cache everything if needed (far better than Drupal or Joomla).

You don't only manage the content but you also manage everything else.
To my knowledge not many CMS offer this level of freedom (maybe Expression Engine and Silverstripe).

Have fun with this exceptionnal CMS.

@Mce: "But how does one remove the MODX TOOLBAR at the top of the website???"

You mean QuickEdit (MODx 0.9.6.3) / Quick Manager+ (
MODx Evolution 1.0.2).

It is a plugin in MODx. To disable this plugin do following steps:

MODx 0.9.6.3:
Login to backend > Resources > Manage resources > Plugins > QuickEdit > Plugin Disabled (check) > Save

MODx Evolution 1.0.2:
Login to backend > Elements > Manage Elements > Plugins > Quick Manager+ > Plugin Disabled (check) > Save

Well MODx does not do blog very well. Does not even have back tracks yet. I heard you can integrate WP into MODx or the parts MODx is missing. Try searching and it may help.

They have something called Ditto, but its still nothing like WordPress out of the box.

I am really loving MODx so far but also know it can't be everything to everyone. Other CMSs have their place too.

But how does one remove the MODX TOOLBAR at the top of the website???
Posted By: geoff on December 20 2009 01:43 am
i have been using modx for almost two years and i honestly think it is brilliant. for a graphic designer to grasp this system and not be restricted by design is fantastic. i have slowly began to learn php as well, and the more i learn the more i love modx.

the best part of modx if its flexibility and customisation. i use it for small websites with 20 pages to corporate websites with 3500 pages and 2000 users.

well recommended, powerful, scalable and easy and quick to edit.
