XOOPS Description
XOOPS is a program that allows administrators to easily create dynamic websites with great content and many outstanding features. It is an ideal tool for developing small to large dynamic community websites, intra company portals, corporate portals, weblogs and much more.

XOOPS is an acronym of eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System. Though started as a portal system, XOOPS is in fact striving steadily on the track of Content Management System. It can serve as a web framework for use by small, medium and large sites.

A lite XOOPS can be used as a personal weblog or journal. For this purpose, you can do a standard install, and use its News module only. For a medium site, you can use modules like News, Forum, Download, Web Links etc to form a community to interact with your members and visitors. For a large site as an enterprise one, you can develop your own modules such as eShop, and use XOOP's uniform user management system to seamlessly integrate your modules with the whole system.

Xoops is a really good cms on all point. Simple , very flexible and reliable. You can easily create a new module (with only a few constraints due to cms) and integrate it. If you are a professional or individual developer you can do everything you want without download modules or extensions. Moreover, It use smarty template making it very simple to make a theme.
There is just one bad point: tutorials are not easily to find. But xoops is easy to understand, that's why there are not a lot of tutos i think.

In my opinion, it's the more adapted cms for developers contrary to joomla or wordpress.

Sorry for my bad english.

XOOPS 2.5.0 is moving along very nicely. Check out the Alpha 2 release and see the videos: http://www.xoops.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=5249

XOOPS, its worth while to stay with it! Recently, its been very active, there are very strong modules ,very supportive community, and 2.5 is coming out with ajax which is going to be huge. its safe, and can be used to create very complex systems or dumbed-down single-user sites.

XOOPS back-end is very nice and straight forward, and I like it better than the compilation. Specially modules installs and block admins.

it will take you less time to learn then joomla and drupal, and can allow you to achieve great results!

I have been using Joomla for a while and all the hundreds of modules and components for it can get confusing.
I downloaded the latest Xoops to see what that is about.
I had some problem getting past the first page of the installation wizard using Firefox. It stayed stuck at the Language select index and would not go forward. I tried another browser Opera and it worked. So go figure.

The basic core looks ok. But the Modules need upgrading. A lot of the modules are from 2005, 2006 and some of them have been abandoned by the developers who left broken links to their websites.
Lots of broken links on the xoops.org site.
So good job on releasing a new Xoops 2.4.2.
Now somebody should review the xoops.org site and fix all the old broken links.
Unfortunately in my opinion, although it may be great software some of the modules are getting rusty and I can't see dropping Joomla to get into what I see as rusty bugged modules.

The cms itself is really good, especially the module system.
But:
In 2.4.0 xoops has grown a lot. Over 3.000 files and several MBs (10 MB I think) only for a VERY basic install! Since you need at least a news module, it is getting even more files. I hope that they decrease the amount of files in the next big release, because the installation is terrible without SSH access (with SSH access you can upload the .tar.gz and extract the archiv with the "tar" command)..

XOOPS is fantastic, and is getting better and better. One of the individuals below - Paul - is just trolling here, trying to advertise for a competing project.

The best thing is always to try for yourself - the new version 2.4.0 has been just released with tons of new features.

* a new Admin GUI: Oxygen
* new mechanism to modularize and extend Core via Preloads
* central support for jQuery
* improved Installer
* WCAG 2.0 - Sight Impaired Assisted Forms
* Themeable Admininstration area
* support for new WYSIWYG Editors: CKEditor, wymeditor, Xinha, and Spaw2
* new System License Key
* Support to PHP 5.3

There is a reason why XOOPS has been a finalist in 2008 and 2009 CMS Awards competition organized by Packt Publishing.

From 2004-2007 there was not much new development going on with XOOPS. Even though this is true, this CMS still managed to scoop the top CMS awards throughout the Internet.
The last 1,5 years a lot of new developments have been put into XOOPS and XOOPS CMS is currently our company's #1 CMS system. We've installed this in many, many websites now and we are very pleased with the results, as are our customers.
The ease of use and the permissions system is one of the bigger benefits.
Also adding your own content, customizing the CMS or expanding it is a very big plus!

With some key-developers throughout the world, the core of XOOPS gets better and better.

I've been using Xoops for over 2 years now. It is highly customizable and easy-to-use. I highly recommend it.

I had used Xoops since 2004 to 2007; no new features in five years. Just I have tried the demo in this site and...is the same again. Now, there are very few module devs o theme designers; the time for Xoops is gone.

I am quite new to Xoops but having tried Drupal, Joomla and other CMS I would say this is the most user-friendly and easy to setup for those with limited knowledge of such things (me!).

It is also highly customisable so great for more advanced Users too I believe :)

Xoops is gaining momentum over recent times, with a good support system and many themes and modules to use.

Currently xoops has a good social networking module called Yogurt, which I currently use on my fansite, I am yet to find any other cms module that can do what yogurt can do.

overall xoops is very easy to work with and easy to upgrade.

In comparison to the other top CMS out there Drupal, Joomla, wordpress, Dotnetnuke. My experience xoops is a better all round system allowing for multi site administration.

There are many modules, but until recently it was trial and error with which ones worked and which did not. This is changing now which is good to see.

I highly recommend xoops for security and ease of use.

I've used XOOPS for a little over a year now and I am quite pleased with it. It is not something I would advise for an utter newbie webmaster but with the wide range of modules available, you can easily adapt it to whatever you might need. I tried several other CMSs including Drupal and all flavors of Nuke I could find and none of them were quite as easy to deal with as XOOPS.

Justwant to say that: 1. the two branches of xoops have been merged into the current stable release of 2.3.1 2. upgrade scripts from both former branches are included in the download 3. the download comes with modules for enhanced PMs, enhanced user-profile management, site protection and selectable admin interfaces as standard. The community is now at one with a renewed sense of purpose and we move to xoops 3.0 - come see for yourselves and give our free software and free support a go! JAVesey Forums Moderator xoops.org

I have been developing my own custom application on xoops 2.0.18.1 for a couple of months now. I like its framework design. I find that it is easy for a developer new to xoops to write apps integrated with xoops core. That is, getting the same look and feel, calling the core to authorize access to my own application. Overall, I find this CMS very userfriendly, if your goal is to develop custom application and leveraging the underline user management facilities in the CMS. I recommend it.
